Throttle slowly lost response over the period of about a minute, then the car started shaking really badly and the engine cut out completely. When you try to start it it makes a really rough backfiring sound, runs for about 3 seconds, then dies again.

MAF sensor or camshaft position sensor are the first things I’d check.

Smack the bottom of the fuel tank on the right side while a helper cranks the car. You’ve described fuel pump failure to a tee (though it’s not the only possibility), and 9 times out of 10 you can confirm it and get it running by smacking the tank.

The 2.7TT was the S4, the TT got the 1.8T and the 3.2 VR6. I’d love to do a 2.7TT swapped TT though, that’d be a blast!
